A Peaceful Retreat

"A stunning, tranquil space that’s brought nature and calm back into our lives. It’s been a game-changer for our wellbeing. Thank you, Rebecca." - Greg & Kathy, Cavendish
When the clients approached me, they were despairing that anything could be achieved in their completely paved over, compact, oddly shaped garden, that until recently had been dominated by a garage. They also had quite a few requirements, including ample space for entertaining family, an area for cooking, a second seating area, a water feature, and rich planting to attract wildlife.

A radial design takes the emphasis away from the angular layout, while generous areas of planting blur the boundaries and offer interesting views from the house, and the different seating spaces. The planting includes Nepeta, Geum, Euphorbia, Allium and Salvia, which have been enjoyed by the bees and contributed to making local honey. Ornamental grasses offer structure throughout the winter months, and a multi-stem Heptacodium miconioides provides a sculptural focal point from the house and late-season pollen for bees.

Beautiful limestone paving with clay paver detail and a corten drain channel elevates the hard landscaped areas, and use of quality materials ensures the clients will enjoy this garden for many years. A millstone water feature with bespoke paver detail provides a stunning focal point, and a peaceful place to relax with just the gentle sound of the water, local birds, and the hum of bees.
